Home Decor Ideas and Tips

Posted by | Decorating Ideas | Posted on February 19th, 2010

Expecting guests very soon but in need of a quick home makeover? Are you trying to give your room a livelier ambience but aren’t willing to stretch your budget? Whether you’re contemplating of renovating your home or just trying to revitalize the look of your living room, here are some tips you just might want to consider.

Redesign your floor

As the room’s centerpiece, you’ll be surprised as to how a new area rug can dramatically change the look and feel of any room in your home. If there’s not much furniture in your living room, a dark rug with heavy pattern can make up for the lack of home accessories and furnishings. For a bedroom that looks a bit cramped and busy, a light colored rug with little or no pattern helps create an illusion of greater space. Instead of refinishing your floor, save time and money by purchasing a new area rug for your home.

Adorn your bare walls

Rather than applying a fresh coat of paint or peeling that expensive wall paper, hanging a new mirror or decor might just be a wiser and practical alternative. Effortlessly bring new life to your abode with a framed art painting or a wrought iron wall décor. Whether you’re trying to match your room’s Contemporary or Victorian theme, you don’t really need to dent your budget to enhance your room’s beauty. An inexpensive porcelain wall décor might just do the trick.

Reduce your clutter

Sometimes all you need to do is organize. Most homeowners get delighted of how much additional space additional storage accessories like cabinets and shelves can bring. Chest drawers can help you store and arrange reading materials that can be an eyesore when left scattered. Decorative coat racks and keyholders help adorn and bring order to your home.

Keep in mind that although you’ve set a cap on your budget, your options for redecorating your living room or entire home are virtually unlimited. Being practical doesn’t mean you need to compromise the beauty of your home. All it takes is a little research and imagination.

Cheap Home Decorating Ideas With Paint ..10 Tips For a Good Paint Finish

Posted by | Decorating Ideas | Posted on February 18th, 2010

I love paint. Painting is one of the cheapest ways to change the whole look of a room. Anyone can paint if they just abide by a few tips. I will give you 10 tips that should help you get a good paint job.First decide what color you want to paint your room. Somethings to consider are how much light filters into the room and how much time you will be spending in this room.Definitely pick out a color you really like if this is a room where you spend a lot of time. Below are 10 tips to get a good paint job.Come visit me at Gail J Richardson http://www.dimedecorating.com/651/

1. Clean dirty surfaces so the paint will be able to bond properly to your surface.

2. Patch any holes in the wall and lightly sand to a smooth finish. The porous fillers usually absorb the paint and the wall will have a different sheen if you do not use primer on these spots. So primer first.

3.Use cloth drop cloths. Regardless of how good you are spills happen. even with drop cloths clean spills up at once as they may bleed through or you might step in them and track paint. The reason I say to use cloth drop cloths is because plastic drop cloths are very slippery and do not stay in place.

4.Mix several cans of paint in a large bucket or enough to do your room.the reason for this is because even though your paint should be the same color it’s not a perfect world and sometimes its not. By mixing it in a larger bucket your paint will all be the same. Mix well.

5.Paint the trim first. The ceilings and then the walls.let the trim dry for at lease 24 hours before painting the walls.you can tape the trim off if you like but use a easy release tape.Be sure to get a smooth finish on the wood trim.

6. Once the trim paint has been allowed to dry for 24 hours .Cut the tape loose and the reason being for this is that if you just jerk the tape of I can guarantee you that you will pull some of you new paint off with it. So use a utility knife and cut down the edge of the tape and gently pull the tape off.

7.Avoid lap marks. To avoid lap marks roll the full height of your wall and keep a wet edge .With each up and down roll move the roller over slightly each time.

8.When you trim out the corners and places that your roller can’t go immediately roll the edge of where you have painted with the brush to cover up the paint brush marks. I like to use Prudy Paint Brushes because they do not shed and they clean-up and last really well.

9.Feather out paint with your brush where you can’t keep a wet edge so the brush marks won’t show.

10.A second coat on the trim may be necessary if this is the case then you should lightly sand the trim for your smoothest finish.

Side Note:Even thought paint is the paint is one of the best cheap home decorating ideas you still want to do a good job.

Now it’s time for the clean-up. double the life of your paint brush. Use newspaper to wipe excess paint and then place in warm water. Next put the brush under running water and the best way to help loosen unwanted paint is to push down the length of the brush with a wire brush.Run water over the brush until it runs clear.Clean-up is the life of you paint brush.Use running water to clean up your roller covers also. Just continue to run water over them until the water runs clear.squeezing from the top and pushing towards the bottom of the roller cover will help get it clean. If you really want to and you do a lot of painting they make a roller washer. One more tip that I have found really helpful is this. Before you replace one of your light covers, take a piece of masking tape and write on it how many gallons your used for this room and include the color formula sticker and if the room needs a touch-up there will be no guess work.

Cheap Home Decorating Ideas – 3 Reasons To Understand The Color Wheel – Color Matters

Posted by | Decorating Ideas | Posted on February 18th, 2010

A color wheel is an abstract organization of hues around a circle, showing relationships between colors considered to be primary, secondary, tertiary colors. You want harmony with your schemes. Harmony can be defined as a pleasing arrangement of parts. Color harmony is pleasing to the eye and can create a balance of visual experience. If it is not harmonious it could be boring or to wild to look at and you being satisfied with in your end result. Color harmony has visual interest and order. One thing that is important when you are choosing you paint colors is to determine what the room will be used for. That said if it is a room you will be only using off and on during the day you could be a little more daring and choose colors with less harmony if it pleases you.

When you are choosing colors for a living room or kitchen I would say to still to colors with harmony. Color is the quickest and most inexpensive way to create a totally new look in your home. Using bright colors in a room can be very stimulating while whites and beige can be very calming and relaxing. Personally I love bright colors and I have been known to go against the color wheel and be bold. I guess this a lot about my personality but if you have a hard time choosing colors you may want to stick to the color wheel because it will not lead you wrong.

When choosing colors for your trim I choose to stay with a trim white but you can also go two or three shade little than your wall paint. Crown molding really makes your room. Install crown molding and learn how to make the cuts and install it yourself. I have also started using colors in my rooms for the ceilings that are two or three shades lighter than my walls. This really works well for the higher ceiling because it adds warmth to the room. The three different colors on the color wheel are listed below. Choose your colors wisely as not to have to do more than once. Cheap home decorating ideas are good but you do not want to be doing it over. Colors on opposite sides of the color wheel go together in harmony.

In color theory, these are the 3 pigment colors that can not be mixed by any combination of the other colors. Different colors are derived from these 3 hues:

PRIMARY COLORS Red, yellow and blue SECONDARY COLORS Green, orange and purple are colors formed by mixing the primary colors. TERTIARY COLORS Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green and yellow-green.

The three main reasons to understand the color wheel are:

1. To have colors that are pleasing to the eye.

2. You do not want to be doing your paint job over to quickly and with paint being the cheapest way to spruce up a room your time and labor are worth something.

3. Understanding the color wheel will help you get paint harmony in your home and make it a pleasing place to call home, and having someplace to call your special retreat at the end of the day can change your hole attitude.

Cheap Home Decorating Ideas – 6 Things Your Family Can Do

Posted by | Decorating Ideas | Posted on February 18th, 2010

Decorating is something I do with a passion. It gives me so much pleasure to play a big part in the way my home looks. With every one on a little tighter budget this year will be a good year to put the old things we already have to work for us. I have used things in a different room or paint them a different color and I start to believe they are new. One thing that I have found to be so rewarding is to let your children help with the project. It helps give them pride in there homes and a since of accomplishment. Try some of the cheap home decorating ideas below.

1. Try this to make a small space look larger and fell brighter. Cover a whole wall with mirrors. Shop flea markets, yard sales, dollar general and use some you already have. Use all different size mirrors and paint them the same color to bring unity to your collection. Hang the mirrors at random heights, Start about chest high and go almost to the ceiling.

2. Use picture frames to create a new focal point in a room. Gather up old frames at yard sales or buy cheap ones at your local shopping center. Use all different sizes and shapes for this project. Get enough to cover a six by six square section. It does not have to be square I am just giving you an idea of the space you can cover. Take the backs and the glass out of the frames and discard. Take your frames and hang them on the desired wall in no certain order. Now comes the fun part. Find some wall words at your local craft store and create the saying that you like. There does not have to be an order here either just place them where they will say your saying. What a great focal point for any room.

3. Have you priced flower arrangements lately? If you have you will know that they carry a high price tag. This is what I do and I get compliments all the time. Shop you local craft store for there discontinued ideas or sale items.Sometimes they mark stuff down as much as 80%. Find one that you like the size and style of. Now shop for stem flowers that are on sale and pick your color and ad them to your arrangement to make them personal to your home.I really like to do this because over time you can collect up sales flowers for every season. Keep them in a sealed tote and when the new season rolls around just take some out and ad the new seasons. Now you have a fresh flower for every season and reason.

4. Paint just one wall in a room to create a stunning effect. You should stay in the same paint family but you can go as many shades lighter or darker as you want. This can be done in one day and can change the look of the whole room. Rearrange the furniture and you are good to go.

5. Use an inexpensive large wall clocks as the focal point in any room. When you use a large clock it can usually be used alone. They are making so many styles of clocks now you can always find a unique one to fit your homes theme.

6. Use Inexpensive area rugs to ad a touch of beauty to any room. Not only will it ad beauty be it can be your focal point and ad warmth to any room.

Learn to get the most for your money and when decorating the interior of your home learn how to bring some of that old stuff back to life instead of buying new.Sometimes after we look at stuff a lot we see it as lease desirable but remember how it made you feel when you first bought. Change it a little with some paint or new flowers and bring it back to life. Or maybe just move it to another place in the room.

I am going to list 7 amazing makeovers below that you can do yourself and not break the bank. Try at least one of them and see what you think.

1.Ad some wall art. Wall Words are becoming very popular these days. they can personalize any room. The vinyl can be a bit pricey but there are ways to get the same effect much cheaper by stenciling them on the wall and painting them yourself.

2.Ad a glass shelf across your kitchen window. This is a neat place to display those beautiful wines glasses.by using glass for your shelf you don’t block the light coming into your kitchen.

3.Ad frosted glass door to your kitchen cabinets. You don’t even have to ad it to all of them just the ones you prefer. This will create visual space to your kitchen but the frosted glass will still conceal the content of your cabinets. For an even more stunning ad a light.

4.Buy old vintage suit cases at yard sales or flea markets and stack them to make a unique end table. The suit cases don’t have to be alike or even the same color. Miss matched will ad more eye appeal.

Cheap Home Decorating Ideas…3 Amazing Wow Your Walls Quickies

Posted by | Decorating Ideas | Posted on February 18th, 2010

Have you ever wondered just why some peoples houses just seem to come alive while others are so drab.Next time you are in a house that just screams life, take a good look around and I’ll bet you will see things that you never would have tried until now. What’s the worst that can happen? You have to paint a room twice.I don’t think that will happens but when you try new stuff it’s always a possibility but how will you know unless you try.Paint is the most versatile of all decorating options. The price is good and you can usually do it yourself.Paint can be as calming or as daring as you like you just need to decide what look you are going for, what the room will be used for and how much time you will be spending their.I am going to give you 3 cheap home decorating ideas that will bring your walls back to life with what ever colors you choice to use.

1.Stripes for Casual Character. I like to just just freehand paint my stripes.as this gives the wall a soft look that looks informal. You will need to measure of and mark the width of you stripes but then just paint them by hand without taping them off.4 to 6 inch stripes are a good size. Wider stripes may take over the room but narrower stripes are harder to but so I have found that to be a good size. Choose your colors in accordance with the mood you want your room to convey.

2.Horizontal Stripes to Create An Impression This technique works best with 3 colors of the same family so the first thing to do is paint a base cost of your lightest color and let it dry.I like to keep the horizontal lines more uniform so it is a good idea to use a level to mark them off and then use painters tape to tape them off. You decide how wide you want your stripes to be and you can rotate different sizes if you like. you can do the whole room in the stripes or just one wall for a great focal point.

3. Paint a Wall Plaid this process is a little more time consuming than the others so I like to use it a focal point wall or a small room such as a bathroom. you should tape off and paint your horizontal stripes first using two rotating colors. If you prefer you can paint a base coat, let it dry and then you will just have to mark off your rotating color and paint it. Once it dries to get then plaid effect you will need to tape off your vertical lines and use diluted white paint for this effect.

I hope you can find at least one of these cheap home decorating ideas that you can use. Your home is the one place that should show the style of life that is you.An always remember that

“Your story Begins At Home”.

10 Home Decorating Ideas To Quickly Update Any Room

Posted by | Decorating Ideas | Posted on February 18th, 2010

Not all home decorating ideas require a heavy investment of time and money. If you’re looking for a few affordable home interior decorating ideas to freshen up a room over a weekend, try these ten:

1. Rearrange The Furniture- Pull your furniture away from the walls. Try positioning it at intriguing angles. For example, a sofa arranged diagonally across a narrow living room will make the room look wider.

2. Paint A Wall- Paint one wall your favorite color and make it the focal point. Hang interesting art on that wall and move a nice piece of furniture there. (Note: Make sure that the color is one that is shared with several other objects and fabrics in the room.)      http://www.moneybizhome.com

3. Bring In Plants- Greenery always adds a breath of fresh air to a room. If you don’t have a green thumb, try silk plants and trees. The quality has gotten so good that its hard to distinguish them from the real thing.

4. Lay An Area Rug- An area rug is a wonderful way of defining a conversation area. Try one that complements the room. Lay it at an angle beneath your coffee table.

5. Hang Pictures or Mirror- Hang pictures that reflect your personality. Try frames that are more ornate. When hanging a mirror, try and position it so that it reflects and nice view or an interesting architectural element.

6. Group Figurines- Pull out your favorite collectibles. Show off your personality. Find a display area and group related objects together, in sets of three or five. Try and vary the shapes.

7. Add Decorative Pillows- The good news about decorative pillows is that they are an easy way to add textures and patterns to a room. Still better, they can be changed to jazz up a sofa or chair before your room is ready for a major makeover.

8. Replace Lamps- Lamps are probably the one thing in your home that will give others a clue that your room is outdated. Seek out new and fresh lamps that make a statement.

9. Add A Throw Or Afghan- Similar to decorative pillows, throws and afghans add texture to your furniture. They come in all kinds of natural and man made fabrics. Find a pattern and style that you like.

10. Eliminate Clutter- Clutter has a way of eliminating the desired mood and effect of any room. Find storage spaces for papers, toys, and other items that take from the personality of a room.

Home Decorating Ideas – Elements of Country Style

Posted by | Decorating Ideas | Posted on February 18th, 2010

What do you enjoy most about Country Home Decorating? For some it is the casual, colorful, nic-nac haven of the 1980’s…I remember that time, do you? Other country home decorating ideas of the past included ruffles, painted wood plaques on the walls, wreaths made of natural materials, braided area rugs, pine furniture, bunnies and duckies (with clothes on) in the front yard…it was and still can be, a comfortable, cozy and homey type of decor. At that time it was THE look in my midwest neighborhood!

Twenty five years later, Country home decor is still a comfortable and sought after look, although some of the elements have undergone a 21st century transformation. In this fresher, updated look, the wall plaques and ruffled plaids may no longer be present, but the overall look is still casual, informal and inviting.

Antique pieces, distressed wood (from age or intentional) of pine, oak and maple are staples of country home case goods. There are many great sources of new furniture that provide that ‘got this from my grandmother’ look, and are well-made, too – a big plus! If your style preference is more sophisticated upscale county, you’ll most likely select new pieces which will have a light wood finish and a slightly more traditional look as opposed to a Colonial style turned leg, for example.

The cute ginghams and red, blue and green plaids are gone. Textile choices should remain organic, informal and durable, but the pattern and color schemes may vary, depending on homeowner taste. Select your color scheme early on in the project, determining the two or three colors that will make up your palette, and add one or two accent colors. Then stick with the plan to ensure that your space retains that ‘put together’ look.

As with any home decorating project, Country Home Decorating requires thoughtful planning with regard to the budget, color scheme and coordination of the furniture, accessories and room layout. And please remember that country decor doesn’t mean cluttered and disorganized.

Collectables such as candles, baskets, porcelain figures, small antiques, baskets or whatever your passion is, can be displayed in a way that showcases them rather than disappearing into the background. How? Display your pieces in groupings of five or less, varying the size and shape of each piece and thus creating an interesting vignette. Whatever you decide to use as an accent in your country style home, make sure it is something that you love and enjoy having around every day, and that will be your secret to success.

Country style decorating is practical, so look for ways to make your pieces multi-task, or give them a new function. For example, if you have found the most perfect hand-woven basket to add to your home’s country decor, use it for storage as well. The antique nightstand that you picked up at the flea market may have a place in the guest bathroom as a small storage unit.

Whether your unique interpretation of country style decorating is rustic, casual and primitive, or updated, fresh and simple…decorate from the heart with pieces you love and you will be pleased with the result.

Cheap Home Decorating Ideas and How to Decorate Even on a Strict Budget – Creativity, Not Money

Posted by | Decorating Ideas | Posted on February 18th, 2010

There are cheap home decorating ideas that can have a very rich look. Our homes reflect who we are and how we want to live our lives.Cheap home decor dose not have to look cheap if we mix it just right with other items. I like to surround myself with the colors I like. My home is my castle and I am the queen and it is the one place that things will be to my liking. It is my private place. We had been planning on building a house for about 10 years and I bought a new book or magazine every few days. I had a whole list of ideas and books with lots of marked pages. And I tried to use them all.

It took us 2 years to build and by the time the house was done there was not must left for interior decorating. Decorating on a budget began.Well being determined like I am I got my books out and started researching what I could do with stuff I already had and how I could make good use of yard sale items. It surprises me the number of things we can do with picture frames. I started buying all the frames I could find at yard sales. With some when the pictures were ugly, I just went to the local craft store and found some beautiful prints for 4 or 5 dollars. I added a nice mat and I now have some lovely pictures that I get compliments on all the time. In one room I just hung the bare frames. I used all shapes and different finishes. There does not have to be a pattern to this. After you get them hung stand back and look at them. Now imagine what they can say to you. I went and found some small wooden letters and painted them black. I now added them to my wall in and around my frames and the effect was stunning.

Some examples of the words I used were imagine, love, learn, home, and etc…The point is that they do not have to make a sentence, they only need to reflect what you want them to say . The idea can be strictly yours. In my master bedroom closet I have the words “Put your big girl panties on and deal with it” That is the first thing I see when I go to the closet to get my cloths and it makes me smile every time I see it.

Now some people have asked me why would you put that in a closet? Well remember what I told you earlier, I am the queen of my castle and that is where I wanted it. So that is where it is. You do not have to play by any rules and certainly should not. Your home should reflect what you want it to. I found that looking at pictures in magazines gave me some really good ideas. Sometimes people will ask, where did you get that and I do not care to confess that I picked it up at a yard sale and painted it to match my stuff. The cheap home decorating ideas I came up with have some of my most treasured items.

I have some really good and inexpensive ideas so come join me and enjoy my pictures at http://www.dimedecorating.com
