THE BASICS OF BALANCE IN DESIGN AND DECORATING
In design as well as in all other aspects of our lives balance is an important element.
At one time or another, all of us have been in homes, offices, rooms, stores or hotels where we could not wait to get out of. Something felt uncomfortable, awkward, overwhelming, or boring. Balance is a facet of our lives that makes us feel comfortable and grounded. In design, physical balance is achieved through the position, color, texture, shape, size and the direction the eye follows. It takes into account the shape, architecture, size and lighting of the room, home, or place, the furnishings, materials, and accessories.
Rhythm and harmony go hand in hand with balance. Rhythm is defined as “A regular or harmonious pattern created by lines, forms, and colors in painting, sculpture, and other visual arts”, (it can be said that interior design and decorating are visual arts), and harmony is “A pleasing combination of elements in a whole or the way parts combine well together or into a whole”. The three together create a physical, psychological, and pleasant aesthetic visual order.
There are different types of balance and for design the three most common ones are:
Balance considers the scale and proportion of sizes and shapes of objects.
Proportion refers to the relationships in size, one part to another or to the whole, and it also refers to the relative size of each item.
Scale refers to “the size of objects in relation to one another and to the human body. In decorating, good scale is the result of eye pleasing relationships between furnishings and other objects and the space they are used in.”
Furnishings must be proportionate to the size and floor plan of the room, as well as functional and attractive.
When designing or decorating there must be flowing transition around a room or between rooms. There must be space to move around without bumping into tables, chairs, or other items, and it is more pleasant to go from one room to another that has a similar flow without abrupt changes.
The transition can be created with curvilinear lines in furnishings, patterns and colors, uninterrupted by hard corners and rigid straight line pattern formations, or excessive contrast of color and style between rooms.
Some people use Feng shui, pronounced “fong shway” or “foong swee”. Feng shui means literally wind-water and is the Chinese Taoist art of arranging the surrounding environment: space, objects and places around us to achieve energy, harmony, and balance, and promote the free flow of chi.
Contrast is used to add interest to a room and it works best in small increments. For example a striped pattern and a flower pattern pillow of similar or same colors on a solid color sofa; a black sofa against a red wall; a round table and stripe covered chairs. Well combined geometric forms and patterns can also give a fresh contemporary look. Too much contrast is overwhelming and too much repetition is boring.
Accessories need to be balanced as well. Control your urge to put out everything you own or “love”. Too much of something, no matter how lovely, it’s just simply too much, but a well placed collection as/in a focal point might be very attractive, such as glass bottles of different colors and sizes; ceramics; art work, etc.
It is uncomfortable and unsettling to look all over the place without a focal point. The focal point may be as common as a fireplace, a window, or a piece of art where you arrange furniture and items to direct the eyes toward it. The focal point provides reference and stability to a room.
Don’t forget the ceilings; they don’t always have to be white! If you have green walls the ceiling can be painted in a much lighter shade of the same color. If the room has a great source of light, especially natural light, the ceiling can be painted darker than the walls. Use decorative molding, trim, or wallpaper. The room looks unbalance and unfinished when the walls have a rich color and the ceiling is just white.
One the most important things to remember is to have fun. Find a style you like, experiment, try it out, arrange and rearrange. Don’t be disappointed if it does not look like the picture of the design magazine. However, don’t ignore reality: if there are children or pets a light cream sofa it’s not going to work very well; the traffic patterns may not allow room for the big beautiful stuffed chair; and grandma’s needle point pillows may not fit in with your new contemporary style.
Before you start your project make a plan. On a poster board collect pictures of furnishings, paint chips, fabric samples, tile and wood flooring samples, wall paper, and anything else you might want to use. Place it side by side; check the colors and textures and see what works for you. Your local home improvement store should have most samples of what you need. Decide what items, accessories and furnishings, you are going to use before you choose the paint color. Look in the internet for pictures and ideas. Sometimes, vintage stores have wonderful pieces of furniture and accessories that with minimum modifications can be adapted to many styles and designs. Of course you have to like what you are going to do, but make a decision based on what you need and why versus what you like and want, in the long run you’ll be a lot happier.

For most of us our garden is our refuge. The open blue sky and plant shapes, smells and colors are elemental.
But when it comes to garden furniture, many people choose their garden furniture without thinking about how the furnitureâs colors interact with the environment they will be placed in. High-quality garden furniture can sometimes be found in a variety of colors, or you can paint your furniture yourself. My customers often ask me how to integrate colorful furniture into their garden or landscape. They want to know about color combinations, how to use furniture as a color accent, how to draw your eye with color, or how to create a serene place with color. Itâs a part of my business I really enjoy.
Consider these possibilities for using color with your garden furniture:
Contrasting colors: When a garden design calls for vibrant color I advise contrasting colors such as blue or purple near yellows; or orange or orange-red against emerald or lime greens. Even black furniture (say against a hedge of yellow forsythia) can create a dynamic contrast. Imagine the impact of periwinkle blue Adirondack chairs against a backdrop bed of bright yellow daylilies.
Harmonious colors: If you donât want to challenge the eye or you want a garden space to look larger, choose your garden furniture in colors that match their surroundings. Solid wooden furniture with a rich coat of paint will make every inch of the garden feel luxurious. A bright lime green in a dark, shady spot adds light and an airy quality.
Furniture that matches a garden accent: Think about what you want to highlight. A customer in New England placed a bright tangerine garden bench alongside her koi pond. In this case, the bright bench matched her favorite garden accent, her orange fish.
Serene colors: A customer in the pacific Northwest selected an Adirondack chair painted in white, for her moon garden that was planted with all white flowers. She tells me she lounges in her chair, listening to the night noises under the full moon, her white flowers glowing in the moonlight.
Color can bring your house and garden together: A colorful piece of furniture on a front porch can match your shutters and tie colors in your house to colors in your landscape. Trying matching your houseâs trim color to provide a unified, coordinated look, or choose a contrasting color to add interest. One customer in the Boston suburbs placed her two seat bench in a pale Daffodil yellow to complement her slate blue porch. With spring flowers it was a welcome light color; in the Fall it set off chrysanthemums and traditional gourds.
Colorful furniture with a purpose: If thereâs lots of shade in your yard, chose a vibrant color â colors in shade look great. If you want to draw your eye across the landscape chose a bold punctuation color. If there is dominant color in the garden or house, chose a color that either compliments or contrasts. For best results, keep the color scheme in the garden simple by sticking to one, two or three colors. Avoid a shotgun approach with one color here and one color there. A simple design that takes your house color into account gives a planned, unified look to the garden and your home.
Colors for all the seasons: If you donât have a green thumb and you have a hard time producing harmonious color in your garden, colorful furniture may be the answer. And think about winter too. After the May flowers have passed and the vibrant colors have vanished, a well placed piece of colorful furniture can break up the steady diet of gray and add a bit of brightness to the landscape.
How do I make up my mind? Many gardeners can have a hard time deciding on right color, given the myriad of choices and combinations available. Check to see if your furniture manufacturer can give you pictures of the product you are purchasing in several different colors, or use paint swatches, and bring them with you to the garden to see how they match or contrast the natural colors there.
There are many books available today providing excellent guidance on color in the garden. Concepts that apply to juxtaposing plant colors often make sense when considering the use of color in furnishing your outdoor space. Given the joys of gardening and all the hard work involved, I always recommend you top off your labors with handsomely crafted, durable wooden furniture in a color that rewards your view, let alone the brown dirt under your nails.

The nursery is going to be where you and your baby are spending a great deal of time in the next few years, and it is important to make sure that you make the right choices when it comes to designing it. Whether you have a room that you are planning to convert or you are in a place where you have a completely stripped room to with, take some time and really consider what your options are going to be. The first thing that you need to do when you are thinking about designing a nursery is to decide on your budget. Don’t worry, this is probably the least fun part of the experience, but it also goes by pretty fast.
Knowing what kind of budget you have to work with will let you really start the design process, and it will also help you figure out what where your money needs to stretch. Don’t look at this as a limitation; instead, look at your budget as a way to get very creative as you are planning for a lovely room for your baby to live and grow in.
The next thing that you are going to need to decide on is theme. Choosing the right theme for your nursery is going to go a long way towards helping you figure out how to unify the room and tie it together. If you are building the room up from scratch, consider installing a shelf over it. This will give you a place to set things like a baby monitor, various toys and other important items. Similarly, make sure that you plan out where the changing station is going to be and what you are going to be using.
The first option that you are going to have in front of you is using a changing table. A changing table has a lot of space for things like extra diapers, but it will tend to be a bit more pricey. On the other hand, a dresser is less costly, but will be a little less multi-purpose. You may also want to consider a piece that you purchase used and then refinish; you’d be surprised at what kind of difference that you can make with a fresh coat of paint. Another great choice that you are going to have in front of you is what kind of fabrics you want to use in the room.
The two main qualities that you are looking for when you want to purchase cloth for a child’s nursery are soft and washable. Just assume that you will need to clean it at some point, and remember that you will want to make sure that your baby will like to touch it. Finding storage in your home can be a challenge by itself. But finding storage in your kids room can sometimes seem impossible! Fortunantely there are many storage choices available today to make the task possible.
Furniture:
Youth single bunk beds offer more space and storage then traditional beds. Units usually come with a bed on top and storage space below that include a desk with lots of drawers. Also included is a hutch with shelves for storage space that help organize clutter and provide space for a computer and video game. These multi units reduce the need for additional furniture and allow space for book shelves or other accessories that can be used for storage.
Other furniture storage ideas to look for are toy boxes that can hold toys, bench style chairs or window seats that include a storage area underneath the seat.
Closets:
Probably the most useful and convenient storage space in a child’s room. Use of wired shelves can double for storing boxes, toys, games and other items while allowing space to hang clothes. Hooks on the ceiling or walls help keep items off the floor.
Hanging closet organizers are perfect for storing seasonal clothes, or holding sweaters, shoes, and accessories on extra deep shelves. Bins, boxes or crates can hold many loose items or toys and are space savers when stacked on top of each other. If your child is small, put the things they can get themselves down low. By making it accessible, they will be able to put things away more easily.
Shelves:
Need a great solution for displaying all those knick-knacks or trophies? Install shelves, side by side, around the perimeter of the room, a few feet below the ceiling. You will have yards of space for lots of storage and give your kids room a finished looked.

Bins:

That thought is not as prevalent today but still merits attention especially as your home decorating idea begins to develop.
You might say that color is an imperfect science. If you don’t believe me, try looking through a paint sample display for that “perfect” color. Remember, the lighting in the store is much different than the lighting in your home which also changes with the weather conditions and the time of the day and year.
Let’s look at the pros for matching colors in your interior decorating idea:
